In modern medicine, endoscopes are essential tools that allow doctors to examine, diagnose, and treat internal organs with minimal invasion. To ensure precision and durability, these devices rely on materials that combine optical clarity, strength, and biocompatibility. Sapphire is widely used for optical windows and lenses because of its exceptional hardness, transparency, and chemical resistance. It offers superior scratch protection and clarity across visible and infrared wavelengths. Stainless steel, known for its mechanical strength and corrosion resistance, forms the structural housing of the endoscope, ensuring stability and durability during repeated sterilization cycles. Together, these materials create a perfect balance between visual precision and structural reliability.

However, joining sapphire and stainless steel is technically challenging due to their different thermal and physical properties. Vacuum brazing provides a precise and reliable method to bond these dissimilar materials. In this process, a filler alloy is placed between the parts, and the assembly is heated in a controlled vacuum furnace. The vacuum environment prevents oxidation and contamination, enabling a clean, hermetic, and high-strength joint. By carefully controlling temperature, time, and cooling rate, stresses between sapphire and stainless steel are minimized. The result is a durable, leak-tight bond that can withstand thermal cycling and sterilization which is ideal for medical applications like endoscopes that demand both optical performance and long-term reliability.

At Normantherm, we offer advanced vacuum brazing technology and equipment specifically designed for complex assemblies such as sapphire-to-stainless-steel bonding. Our vacuum furnaces ensure uniform temperature distribution, high vacuum levels, and precise process control for consistent, high-quality results. To support the demanding needs of medical device production, Normantherm offers a range of high-performance vacuum brazing furnaces, including the VF1300-422, VF1300-644, VF1300-966, and VF1300-1288 models, each capable of reaching temperatures up to 1300 °C and supporting multiple vacuum pressure levels. With over 15 years of experience in vacuum brazing and heat treatment, our technical team provides full process support from sample testing and process design to production optimization. Normantherm ensures each brazed component meets medical industry standards for strength, leak tightness, and biocompatibility.
