Brass is a vital material in the automobile industry due to its corrosion resistance, machinability, thermal and electrical conductivity, and durability. Automotive components such as sensor housings, heat exchanger parts, valves, fittings, gears, bearings, and brackets rely on brass to perform reliably under demanding operating conditions. However, machining, forming, and joining can introduce internal stresses, dimensional distortions, and uneven microstructures, which can reduce component lifespan and performance. Precise heat treatment is therefore essential to enhance strength, relieve stress, improve dimensional stability, and optimize the microstructure of brass components.

Brass heat treatment primarily involves recrystallization annealing, stress annealing, and soft annealing. Recrystallization annealing restores plasticity, eliminates hardening, and produces a fine grain structure. Stress annealing relieves residual stresses introduced during machining, forming, or joining. Soft annealing, performed at controlled temperatures between 425 °C and 650 °C in vacuum furnaces, improves machinability and relieves hardness caused by cold forming. These processes are particularly beneficial for leaded and lead-free brasses, including CuZn42 (CW510L), CuZn38As (CW511L), and CuZn36 (C27450), helping automotive components withstand friction, wear, and mechanical loads while maintaining high precision and long-term reliability.
